Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information to obtain access to your existing accounts, or open new accounts or credit lines in your name. 

Stay Protected

  • Phishing emails with links to fake websites
  • Smishing messages – similar to phishing but sent as a text message
  • Social media – romance scams, job scams, posting personal information, etc.
  • Public Wi-Fi
  • Simple passwords that are easy to guess
  • Fake computer security pop-up messages
  • Phone calls requesting urgent action and personal information
  • Personal and/or bank information entered on a bogus website
  • ID or other documents stolen from your purse or wallet
  • Home break in
  • Dumpster diving (stealing trash with personal information from a residential or business trash receptacle)
  • Use strong passwords and enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA).
  • Beware of emails or text messages requesting personal information.
  • Be wary of links in emails and text messages. Instead of clicking the link, open a browser and go directly to the company’s website using an address you know is valid.
  • Don’t overshare on social media. Even small amounts of personal information can add up over time and be used to impersonate you.
  • Secure your personal documents and passwords. Considering using a password management app to store. passwords instead of writing them on paper.
  • Shred your sensitive documents.
  • Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet.
  • Monitor your bank accounts regularly for any signs of fraudulent transactions.
  • Review your credit history regularly for discrepancies or new credit lines you don’t recognize. You can request a free copy of your credit report annually at annualcreditreport.com.
  • Enroll in transaction alerts through your bank’s digital banking system.
  • Keep your devices up to date and use security software to monitor for viruses or malware.
